Helen started law school at age 39, after two decades as a paralegal. After graduating from the Faculty of Law at the University of Alberta in 2011, she developed a general practice at a small firm in Central Alberta. Homesick for Calgary and its more hospitable climate, Helen returned to Calgary in June, 2015.
Helen uses a “carrot and stick” approach to family law, meaning that she utilizes the least adversarial approach possible first, keeping in mind that the parties may be forced to maintain a relationship after the legal issues have been resolved. However, in situations where a conciliatory style and mediation is ineffective, Helen is an effective litigator who advocates for her clients’ rights.
Helen has experience Provincial Court, the Court of Queen’s Bench and the Alberta Court of Appeal.
Helen accepts legal aid files. She currently volunteers at the Calgary Women’s Centre and also hosts free seminars on family law topics (look for her Family Law Seminars Meet-Up on the Meet-Up App). Her past volunteer experiences include the Camrose Women’s Shelter and the Vancouver Crisis Centre. In her off hours, Helen enjoys drinking wine, travelling and watching documentaries.
